Abstract:
Our intention with this article is to analyze the challenge at both managerial and theoretical level that supply chain management represents for logistics information and communication systems (LICS). In the first part (§ 1.1), we argue that running supply chains demands an inter-organizational perspective and an extensive communication between parties involves in this kind of running. Then (§ 1.2) we discuss informational implications for LICS. The conclusion of the fist part of the article is that LICS must no longer be designed with a pure transactional approach. In the second part (§ 2.1) we explore the concept of IIS or IOS (inter-organizational information system) to go trough the limits of the transactional view and to define a framework suitable for the design of "meta-LICS" that support inter-organizational communication and supply chain management. Finally, we identify questions related to the implementation of such kind of information systems.
