Abstract: The territories of the hispanic-lusitanian colonies were characterized by a subsistence economy which then changed to agricultural and mining activities using forced black and native labor in order to join the world trade. In the case of the province of Costa Rica, this suffered a late colonization but eventually was introduced into the capitalist world market with the "golden bean": the coffee. This article presents a dialogue between different authors showing the various theories of the pre-capitalist formations in Latin America and the transition to capitalism in order to understand the specific case Costa Rica province compared to the Brazilian case. This will expose how these changes in the inter relationship between the productive forces and production relations and between new forms of land tenure during the conquest, they will redesign the economic, social, urban and political development of the new republic declared in 1821.
