Abstract: Using data from the European Working Conditions Survey of 2010, this study examines the determinants of sickness absence and presenteeism in European countries. Special emphasis is put on the impact of the generosity of sickness benefits. The analysis is carried out using multilevel regression models. The results show that the probabilities of sickness absence and presenteeism vary significantly across countries. As expected, the generosity level of the sickness benefit system positively affects the probability of absence. By contrast, the results do not allow to conclude that this factor has a symmetric effect on presenteeism.
