Abstract: While Schumpeter claimed that reading the Wealth of Nations did not add much to economic analysis, he did recognize its important pedagogical values. This excessive presentation highlights the impact of Adam Smith on the development of political economy. Through his contradictions, but also through his sense of the links between economics and other moral and philosophical components of mankind, he has often been a source of inspiration for many economists, both for those who claimed to be inspired by his thought (division of labor, invisible hand, freedom of trade and industry, systematization of competition) and for those who rejected it (class struggle, human costs, relations of force, imperialism). He does not limit himself to disembodied analyses of the economy, he refutes slavery and colonization, and wishes to reject the trusts or agreements of the companies to prevent the rules of competition, just as he dislikes the workers' unions that can reduce the productivity and the economic development.
