Abstract: In this paper, we try to interpret the various avatars of the Adam Smith problem since the late 70s, among which we distinguish two major trends: firstly the admitted solutions to the old ASP, which all articulate to the idea of a separation between Smith's economic analysis and his moral philosophy (1976-1991), and secondly the new ASP, which highlights the prospect of a moral gap between the Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations (since 1991). In both cases, we criticize these interpretations, which according to us find their origin in unresolved difficulties that occur in the reading process.
