Abstract: NATO provides member countries with a collective military organization that allows national forces to work together, without loss of effectiveness, in a common defense. Member states concede some of their state prerogatives in the field of national security, as NATO proposes norms and guidelines - such as the rate of growth of defence spending and the percentage of military investment - that partially mitigate their freedom of action. This implies a necessary harmonization of disparate defense forces, coordination among all military forces, common standards, integrated command and control instruments. However, the commercial and strategic interests of nations sometimes diverge and limit the effectiveness of a military security system strongly dominated by Washington.
