Abstract:
Complementary local currencies (CLC) are social currencies aiming to boost local economy and solidarity exchanges. Built to create an alternative to the current monetary system, these CLC are based on hybrid organizations pursuing multiple objectives: economic, social and environmental. From the qualitative study of 5 French CLC case studies, this paper characterizes the ethical / identity, governance or performance tensions that cross these organizations. It highlights the diversity of MLC projects and the role of the political mission and of the link with the anchoring territory on the tensions at work and their effects.
