Abstract: We study the recent dynamics of part-time employment and its contribution to labor market adjustments in France. We show that there are few interactions between part-time and full-time work, and that fluctuations in part-time employment are mostly driven by worker transitions in and out of unemployment and non-participation. Thus, part-time work contributes little to the cyclical adjustment in hours worked that occurs directly within employment. To rationalize these findings, we discuss certain characteristics of labor market institutions in France and their evolution over the past two decades.
