Abstract: The Recent Developments of the History of Banking Crises in the United States This paper surveys the recent literature on banking crises in the United States between 1838 and 1933. A more microeconomic analysis provided these main results : — contagious bank runs took place during the « Free Banking » era - solvent banks have been subject to runs during the National Banking era — during the Great Depression, the main cause of bank failures has been a deterioration of local and regional economic fundamentals.
