Abstract: In the wider world of the Polybius' Histories, the internal and the international stability of the states depend on fragile balances that debt can alter. After defining its dual nature, we will examine the conditions under which debt – that usually enables exchanges between communities – can become a means of control and subjugation. We will then consider the debt situations generated by war and the postwar periods, and the role of the agreements in the peace restoration. We will briefly conclude with two significant cases of debt rescheduling or remissions and Polybius' interpretation of them.
