Abstract: The multiplicity of tools and computer systems within firms can be understood as a digital mess. Some firms will reduce this mess by strengthening the integration of their information systems (IS). SMEs involved in these IS integration projects can choose either to implement an ERP (highly integrated IS) or to implement an alternative system (less integrated IS). Our aim is to understand what level of IS integration SMEs will finally choose. The research empirically analyzes the decision factors of two SMEs having made a distinct choice in terms of IS integration. The results show the combined importance of compatibility, cost and complexity factors in the final decision. SMEs must assess their readiness to engage in a major or moderate innovation to determine if they wish to engage to an ERP or to an alternative system.
