Abstract: Christensen (1997, 2003) introduced the idea that to analyze disruptive or breakthrough innovations, one must go beyond the technological dimension. Disruption is a global process of sectoral transformation that challenges the core competencies and business models of traditional companies in the sector. Christensen's study has paved the way for alternative approaches aimed at deepening this process of sectoral transformation that can sometimes take several decades. One of these alternative theoretical frameworks is the study of transitions from one socio-technical regime to another, and more particularly the multilevel perspective developed by Geels (2002, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2014). It allows us to analyze the process of industrial transformation as a situation of institutional unlocking. Geels considers that transitions from one socio-technical regime to another can be different: simple transformation, more complex reconfiguration, or dangerous disruption. This research aims to better understand the nature of current mutations in the automotive sector through a longitudinal monograph from 2015 to 2022. It highlights a complex multidimensional evolutionary process in successive steps where different axes of transformation evolve at the same time but not at the same speed, leading each other into disruption. It enriches our knowledge of large-scale industrial changes and disruption processes as well as contributes to enriching the theoretical grid of the multilevel perspective.
