Digital technologies as a lever for developing the employability of middle managers

Abstract: In this chapter, the authors conduct an ethnographic study in the industrial management of a large French group and its equipment and parts renovation plants. Their results show that these technologies can be a powerful lever for developing the room for maneuver of the middle manager. Digital technologies became central after a few days of confinement and have modified management practices. The employability of managers depends more and more on their ability to master, integrate and develop these digital technologies in their managerial activity. The action of the middle manager towards his teams can be a powerful lever for the development of individual employability. The arrival of digital technology reinforces the exponential development of the technologies available to the manager. Digital technologies can be a powerful normative cement that hinders the employability of cross-functional managers. Managerial legitimacy is therefore less about technical expertise and more about managerial expertise in leading a network.
