Managing the Work Commitment of SOHO Creative Workers Located in the Same Quarter: A Place-Based Approach

Abstract: In recent years, creative clusters have been developed to foster innovation in the creative and cultural industries, but few studies on clusters of creative SOHOs (Single Office, Home Office) have yet explored new management issues related to this place-based entrepreneurial practice. Based on the recent literature on relational and social approaches to placeness in geography, work commitment and human resource facilitation in clusters, the authors investigate place-based innovative facilitation practices using the case of a creative cluster of SOHOs in Nantes, France. A qualitative analysis of 46 semi-structured interviews reveals a link between work commitment of SOHO creative workers and the quarter-place, a specific organization that reduces uncertainty and instability. The study underlines ongoing changes in management practices adapted to the level of this third-place neighbourhood organization.
