Abstract:
The vast majority of studies examining the relationship between Social Performance (SP) and Economic and Financial Performance (EFP) of companies focus on the US market. This paper aims to analyze this relationship in the context of European companies rated by Vigéo. Our econometric analyses indicate that the social performance of European companies has a positive impact on their economic performance, and negatively on their market returns and systematic risk. Moreover, we show that the relationship between the SP and EFP is moderated by the legal tradition of the country in which the European company operates.
