Abstract:
The fragmented nature of academic research about cooperatives calls for a synthesizing effort. An interpretative textual analysis stresses the centrality of the concept of value(s) – often theorized as an absolute entity and an end-in-itself. This special issue focuses on situated managerial practices and the "democracy-in-the-making" across different cooperatives and the partnership-based model of governance of cooperative banks. The five papers contribute, each in its own way, to illuminating the debate about the possibility to reconcile the search for an economic performance and the sociopolitical dimension of the founding project of cooperatives.
