Abstract: This article aims to demonstrate how rail freight transport in Spain can overcome its structural weaknesses to become a key player in ensuring the transport of increasing flows of goods in a globalised environment where it is essential to opt for less polluting distribution solutions. To begin with, it will be necessary to understand the modal competition that has always existed in Spain and its effects on rail freight transport. Then, we will identify the arguments that require manufacturers to review their supply chain. In order to support them in their desire to streamline their distribution flows, a range of emerging solutions for rail freight in Spain will be studied.
