Abstract: Benefits derived from ecosystem services are under threat, mainly due to human activities. Valuation of such benefits is fundamental to help decision-makers preserve ecosystem services. However, the ability of a traditionally used monetary valuation to capture the different values attributed to ecosystem services has been criticised. Several studies advocate complementing it by a deliberation among actors. The article aims to document this proposal. It compares the respective interests of a choice experiment (CE) and deliberation to evaluate the benefits of insect pollination services. The CE is powerful in revealing, through the estimation of marginal values, the extent of individual preferences, tendency convergence and heterogeneity. The deliberative evaluation is, in turn, crucial in supporting a collective approach to the management of common goods by stimulating complex reasoning, critical examination and the search for the general interest.
