Abstract:
The work of Meyer and Allen (1991) has been of great value to scientific research for having led to the tri-dimension of commitment. This dimension of commitment, namely affective, normative and continuation commitment has been reexamined in several areas. In mining companies, employees often find themselves in the dilemma of wanting to continue to work in a mining company with often decried working conditions where they feel they could be better paid. It is therefore imperative to try to identify the link that might exist between working conditions and the desire to continue working for a mining employee. That is, whether employees prefer to work in a non-glamorous job or in a subsistence job. To arrive at our results, we opted for a mixed methodology, based on which we were able to collect data from employees of mining companies in the EITI 2019 reconciliation scope. Our results suggest that working conditions influence the commitment to continuation, but that job scarcity constraints also played a significant role.
