Enablers for the adoption of contactless payment during the COVID-19 pandemic: cross analysis between Asian and European regions

Abstract: The contagious nature of COVID-19 has enhanced the use of digital technologies, such as contactless payment solutions, to help individuals avoid physical contact with people or objects and limit the possibility of contamination. This study seeks to understand the factors enabling contactless payment adoption during COVID-19 in relation to changes in lifestyle and health safety reasons. Although several researchers have investigated this subject, there is still a gap in explaining acceptance. To address this gap, this study applies the unified theory of acceptance and technology use extended with contamination avoidance, compatibility, trust, and intention to Recommend as model outcomes. Data were collected from a sample of 202 respondents in Asia and Europe and analyzed using the SEM-PLS approach. Our findings confirm the importance of compatibility and contamination avoidance and highlight the importance of habit for European users.
