Abstract: An examination of the social and solidarity economy's role in four local labor markets in the Rhône-Alpes region and two European cities (Berlin and Barcelona) shows the diversity of the social and solidarity economy's models of participation in local economies, i.e., how social and economic choices influence local development. This participation is related to both the size and influence of actors in the shift from sectoral to cross-sectoral integration. This reflects the new dynamics of local development, which emphasize a global transversal approach towards populations and local communities, the value of positive externalities, and synergies between market and non-market activities. This evolution however requires the mediation of institutional actors able to facilitate the transition from collective to general interest.
