Abstract:
Stakeholder theory conceptualizes the firm as a constellation of converging or conflicting interests. This approach therefore implies taking into account a plurality of stakeholders claims in the manager's decision-making process. In order to give priority to these competing demands, the stakeholder identification and salience framework of Mitchell, Agle, and Wood determines the salience of stakeholders to the organization by analyzing three attributes: power, legitimation, and urgency. In this chapter, we demonstrate that a demand-based approach may strengthen the practical reach of this framework. Indeed, this conceptualization offers a dynamic representation of the interactions between stakeholders, that helps managing stakeholders' relationships and prevent the formation of coalitions.
