Abstract:
This research advocates for a more dynamic and integrative view of the strategic choices in terms of formulation and implementation. Through an in-depth analysis of Hermès, we introduce the concept of perpendicular growth strategy where vertical and horizontal integrations coexist and offer a dynamic lens of the implementation modes showing how a resource-sourcing option (organic, relational or acquisition) can be used as a starting and passing point to another one. By doing so, our research aims to move beyond the dichotomous view between horizontal integration and vertical integration, on the one hand, and organic, relational and external growth, on the other.
