Abstract:
The Société à mission, introduced in France in 2019, is based on a freely defined but legally binding statutory mission. Little is known about how these missions are formulated and their consistency with the challenges expressed by the governance of responsible innovation. This article analyses the content of the missions formulated by a panel of pioneers of Société à mission. The results highlight a variety of forms of commitment described as "not-yet-designed", which include a desire to overcome "paradoxical" situations of tension and to undertake "learning" efforts. A typology of missions is proposed, reflecting their varying degrees of credibility in the face of Grand Challenges. This research also highlights expectations regarding the governance of the mission and, in particular, the role of the mission committee.
