Abstract: The existence of Mafia-owned legal enterprises and the possibility for the State to confiscate them raise the question of their real value. Our study shows that the value of these enterprises is hard to assess because they work integrated in a Mafia network that is able to construct specific assets. Moreover the Mafia uses her network of enterprises to establish an artificial scarcity and take control of the infiltrated markets. It creates artificial value. Lastly, the Mafia also uses mechanisms in order to further obfuscate the value of her enterprises.
