Abstract:
How do consumers committed to deconsumption cope with those around them who are not? Framed by Goffman's role theory, the analysis of 24 interviews brings out a typology of roles played in social interactions via the way of to stage them (by saying it to others and by doing it for others): conforming to the values and practices of others (say nothing, do nothing); sensitize others (to say and not to do); impose its values and practices by arguing (saying and doing); camouflage its practices (not saying and doing). The activation of these non-disjoint roles depends on the situation and on the practice.
