Abstract: At a time when big data seems set to revolutionize research practice in most scientific fields, does the case study remain a methodology of the future? To make a social phenomenon a case of scientific interest, the thesis defended in this article is that we must rethink what Blumer called exploration, that is to say the empirical investigation aspect of the case study based on the identification of multiple ways of seeing; rethink the techniques of writing the case, the description and the narration, the first as a layering of ways of seeing (Ryle, Geertz), the second based on a strict protocol and counterfactual reasoning; finally, rethink the theoretical approach to encourage discussion on the case of the explanatory power of several theoretical frameworks (process-tracing, George and Bennett) and the formulation of conjectures (abduction approach, Peirce).
