Encouraging the achievement of goals set and pursued by elderly consumers: the role of Quantified-self smart devices

Abstract: Aging can be slowed down through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. Building on the Selection-Optimization-Compensation model, this research aims to investigate how elderly select their aging goals and to what extend quantified-self devices help them in achieving these goals. Exploratory research was conducted among 16 senior consumers, who were users of QS devices. The analysis of the interviews highlights three main findings: (i) the interrelationships between the desired aging well perspective and optimization behaviors, (ii) the existence of three configurations of specific objectives: self-set, third-party set, and negotiated, (iii) the role of quantified-self devices in achieving and/or negotiating goals.
