Abstract:
Since a few years, the study of taxation in Judaea has regained momentum. Some studies gradually call into question several well-accepted ideas, for instance the impoverishment of Judaea in Hellenistic and Roman periods, the fiscal oppression on the peasantry, the burden of the taxes. The aim of this paper is to highlight the obstacles facing scholarship today: the distorting bias of sources, endless debates around fragile historiographical legacies, the absence of interdisciplinary collaboration integrating this field of study. It advocates for broadening the research perspective to overcome all this and think anew tax structures through their operation rather than the hostility of taxpayers.
