Abstract: The French Gendarmerie Nationale is undergoing a major renewal of its workforce, resulting in an influx of young recruits. In a context of deinstitutionalization and evolving managerial models, the hierarchical chain of command is grappling with intergenerational relations, calling into question the traditional vision of military command. A case study carried out in 2022 on non-commissioned officers in the Gendarmerie Nationale, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, enables us to question, via the concept of the psychological contract (Rousseau, 1989), the role of organizational expectations and promises in the construction of obligations related to the representations of command. the role of organizational expectations and promises in the construction of obligations relating to representations of command among managers and new arrivals. The results indicate that expectations and promises in terms of organizational socialization have a stronger influence on these obligations than any other, in particular the quality of the relationship with the supervisor, which influences adherence, obedience or even attachment to values.
