Abstract: This article explores the ways in which institutional economics can tackle the subject of war's disruptive effects on economies. As a case study, we examine the war in Ukraine, provoked by the Russian troops' invasion. We analyze how Russian collective perceptions have been shaped by various regimes throughout the country's history, as far as war and the fate of its neighbors—notably Ukraine—are concerned. We also use an analytic grid forged by Charles Tilly in order to better understand how organized crime, state formation, and war have been linked in Russia's recent past.
