15 Tensions in the Management of Disabled Individuals: The Case of the Sheltered Sector in France

Abstract:
Individuals with disabilities remain an untapped labor force in mainstream employment (Lengnick-Hall et al., 2008). The unsuitable workplace environment partially explains this situation (Böhm et al., 2011). In this chapter, we consider alternative forms of employment that exist in France and that were implemented to improve the integration of individuals with disabilities in the workforce (Jagorel et al., 2019). We specifically focus on the sheltered sector. We study the specificities and tensions faced by sheltered workshops and consider how they shape managerial practices toward disabled individuals. Three tensions are highlighted: how sheltered workshops deal with specific disability types, how managers play with different organizational logics and, finally, how sheltered workshop professionals deal with confidentiality issues. This chapter contributes to the reflection on managerial practices toward disabled individuals and highlights the creativity and ingenuity that professionals in sheltered workshops have to develop to deal with the multiple tensions they face.
