Abstract:
During 2027, Belgrade will, at least for a short time, be the world capital of education, culture and innovation, as representatives of dozens of countries will find themselves in the Serbian capital for the specialised Expo . Serbia will organize a Specialised EXPO after Belgrade won the competition of Spanish Malaga, American Minnesota, Thai Phuket and Argentine Bariloche at the General Assembly of the International Exhibition Bureau (BIE) in Paris. The most famous event of this international organization is the World Expo, which was previously organized in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2021, and there are horticultural exhibitions, dedicated to sustainable development, as well as art exhibitions of the Triennial with a permanent venue in Milan, Italy. Hosting the Specialized Expo could bring "many benefits" to Serbia, according to Patrice Balester, an expert at the University of Toulouse, who has been studying expo events for more than 15 years. "It contributes to tourism, brand and country representation, in the field of urbanism mainly countries build completely new parts of cities, parks and new fair capacities," he describes to the BBC in Serbian. The French professor also points out that Serbia could also benefit from the organization of this event. "At the diplomatic level, it shows that the country is capable of welcoming foreign delegations and is open to the world, and this was often important for some countries, such as Spain, which organized an exhibition in Seville after the end of the dictatorship," Says Balester. A specialised expo titled "Let's Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All" will open in 2027 and end in 2028, according to the exhibition's official website.
