Abstract: With their hypermarkets, major food retailers remain "mass-selling machines" whose aim is to dispose of a mass production to an extensive customer base. Henceforth, this form of distribution is somewhat antagonistic with a sustainable positioning. The article reflects on how mass-retailing could credibly get to play a role in sustainable development through the sale of its food supplies. Based on the activity reports published by the main food retailing companies and 13 interviews with professionals, three scenarios are proposed as potential perspectives to conciliate the irreconcilable, mass retailing and sustainable development.
