Abstract: This entry highlights the links between the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2007–2008 and the institutional and regulatory environment of financial systems in force since the late 1980s. The ultimate purpose is to point to relevant alternatives to strengthen financial regulation to mitigate financial instabilities and reduce the likelihood of systemic crises.
