Abstract: A centuries-old institution, the National Gendarmerie has demonstrated its ability to engage on various fronts. This wide range of responsibilities has constantly been enriched, leading the gendarmerie to evolve, with new skills, renovated practices and institutional reforms. However, recent years have brought new challenges to the surface, both internally and with regard to society, which is undergoing rapid change. The result of an interdisciplinary scientific conference held under the aegis of the National Gendarmerie Officers School (EOGN) and the University of Paris-Est Créteil (Upec), this work aims to shed an academic light on these managerial and societal challenges. The practices of the gendarmerie are questioned through the work of researchers in management sciences and political science. In conclusion, an extension towards an essential subject: serving and protecting the environment. Opened with a preface by Major General Laurent Bitouzet, this book is intended for master's and doctoral level students (in management sciences, political science, sociology, public management), researchers or gendarmerie officers wishing to better understand their institution and, in general, to those interested in the issues of security, command and management of a public organization. Directed by Joan Le Goff, Claire Edey Gamassou, Patrick Fleurentdidier and Yves Palau, with the collaboration of Benoît Haberbusch, this work includes contributions from Sophie Agulhon, Nicolas Alfano, Abdoulatuf Andjilani, Jérôme Baray, Dominique Bodin, Ruben Claudepierre, Jean-Michel Fauvergue, Patrick Fleurentdidier, Franck Galland, Fabrice Hamelin, Nicolas Jacquin, Philippe Lépinard, Laurent Livolsi, Catherine Maman, Pascale Martin-Bidou, Sylvain Noyau, Soufiane Rahib, Philippe Thiard, Guillaume Troesch and Vianney Vanagt.
