Abstract: River transport is facing a major greening challenge: the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine, the European Union and the French government's commitments for green growth are setting targets for the greening of fleets. As a provider of urban logistics, river transport is also affected by the regulatory constraints of low-emission zones. The research examines the current and future potential of river transport to help supply managers meet regulatory requirements and highlights the interactions between the demands of the regulatory environment and the effective capacities of river eco-systems.
