Abstract: This article, based on a corpus of 32 press articles, is designed to illustrate the official accounts of senior executives who find themselves in professional transition under the supervision of outplacement firms, which provide them with transition assistance following their termination. It explores the way in which specialized press and outplacement organizations employ the management discourse to describe identity issues involved in the outplacement experience. The collected material reveals the presentation of a fictional hero on the public stage, which produces an 'objective reality' of the situation studied. In order to highlight the narrative patterns of heroic tales used by the media, artistic production is considered as heuristic in nature, with particular reference to the symphonic work A Hero's Life by the composer Richard Strauss, understood here as a sensitive universe capable of giving shape and existential meaning to the experience of a negative social situation.
