Abstract: The sector of arts and crafts in France counts over 200 trades and 38 000 enterprises (mainly very small businesses). The paper proposes to mobilize the few empirical data available, then to use different analytical tools (between sociology and economics or belonging to cultural economics) for present a theoretical reading of the various professional positions and for explain the characteristics and strategies of firms in a sector that has not yet been investigated by economists
