Abstract:
The agricultural world is facing particularly marked suffering and fragile mental health (Kallioniemi et al., 2016; Rudolphi et al., 2020). At the same time, new modes of production are emerging (Condor, 2019; Dias et al., 2019), in particular outsourcing (Nguyen et al., 2020; Purseigle & Hervieu, 2022). Our research focuses on the link between agricultural outsourcing and the mental health of farmer contractors. The initial question is concerned with the mechanisms that link them: how and to what extent does agricultural outsourcing improve or deteriorate the mental health of the farm contractors ? Considering that outsourcing can be positive and/or negative for health, we define outsourcing in agriculture and analyse the characteristics of the relationship. We then clarify the notion of mental health and identify two theoretical frameworks, the COR theory (Hobfoll, 1989) and the JD-R theoretical model (Demerouti & Bakker, 2011). Finally, in order to explore the black box that links outsourcing to mental health, we retain the mechanisms of gain and loss, the demands-resources interaction as well as the mechanisms of evaluation of the psychological contract. A qualitative methodology based on multiple case studies will be used.
