Abstract:
Making degrowth emerge from the confines of capitalism remains a major challenge. In this context, this thesis develops a power-centred theory of change, noting that the literature on degrowth has done little to investigate the obstacles to transformations or their potential for systemic scale in the face of capital accumulation. Examining and rethinking the relationship between capital accumulation and degrowth, conceptualising the key dynamics of transformation and resistance, and developing exploratory scenarios, this research draws on an interdisciplinary, processual and systemic approach. Inspired principally by the theory of Capital as Power, the thesis conceptualises transition as a confrontation between transformation and sabotage. The thesis offers an original perspective on the challenges and possibilities of transition to degrowth in a capitalist context, inviting a renewal of thinking about socio-ecological change and a direct confrontation with capitalist power dynamics.
