Abstract: The French wine industry, world leader in terms of wine exports (€12 billion) and renowned for the quality of its products, is facing major challenges such as dependence on pesticides, falling consumption, global warming and the ageing of the winegrowing population. However, varietal innovation, particularly in the form of resistant varieties, offers a promising way of adapting to meet some of these challenges. In this context, cooperative wineries, with their considerable socio-economic weight (60% of winegrowing holdings and 40% of production), their democratic mode of governance and their commitment to society, can play a key role in promoting and implementing these innovations. The aim of this study, carried out as part of the INNOGOUV project, is to analyze the drivers of varietal innovation within these wine cooperatives and, more specifically, the role played by their mode of governance in the adoption of this type of innovation.
