Abstract: Description - In the analysis of regional innovation systems there is much emphasis on the local institutional landscape (structural and cartographic approach) and little detail on what these institutions do exactly, how they interact in different systems, at what scale, and at what level of inter-relationship (interactionist approach). - Beyond the rhetoric, many innovation ecosystems are not ecosystems at all. Rather, they are accumulations of systems. - To move from one to the other, we need to work on interactions: coupling, idea generation, middleground and commons, devices, attractiveness, resilience (Saxenian; Cohendet, Simon and colleagues...).
