Abstract:
Androgyny is the simultaneous co-existence and union of male and female characteristics. The concept appears frequently throughout human history, and can be seen as a Jungian archetype, drawing upon shared culture as much as biology. Despite its significance for historical and present understanding of gender identities and roles, it remains relatively marginal in management and organization studies. Nevertheless, the figure of the androgyne allows for inclusive and mindful discussion of gender that resonates with social experience while retaining paradox and complexity central to human sexuality, and has been successfully used to interpret advertising tropes, managerial approaches and organizational constitution.
