Abstract:
This article explores how managers of the Port of Lomé (Togo) communicate, and act upon the challenge of sustainability. We find that the organization strives to communicate and shed light on the human, strategic, and environmental dimensions of its activities, despite a high level of complexity and economic constraints. The discourses of managers are focused on a description of the actions taken to change and improve the organization's practices. This focus on improvement is found to operate at both discursive and performative levels, showing therefore that so-called ‘deontological' managerial discourse can translate into concrete and purposeful sustainability actions.
