Abstract: The behavioral theory of the firm has explored the slack innovation relationship, but the findings are mixed due to the multidimensionality of both concepts. This study integrates both financial and entrepreneurial perspectives using FsQCA to analyze2 941 innovation-focused SMEs. We differentiate incremental from radical innovation, highlighting the various discretionary natures of slack and the importance of public support, a competitive environment, performance, and R&D in driving different innovations. The results clarify the asymmetric contribution of slack components to radical and incremental innovation.
