Abstract:
The geopolitics of protein appears as a game with numerous stake-holders and dependencies. Firstly, this article highlights historical and strategic factors which drove Europe towards dependence, particularly on the Americas. Secondly, it explains economic and ecological consequences of these disequilibriums: sectoral specialisation and "re-primarisation" of producing countries on the one hand, heavy deforestation accelerating climate change on the other hand. Finally, a European proactive policy could however enable to go beyond these dependency relations in the medium term.
