Abstract:
The urban area of Conakry (the capital of Guinea) is experiencing rapid population growth, leading to urban sprawl that is undermining natural ecosystems. Faced with these challenges, peri-urban agriculture is seen as a lever for action. The development of green belts is a model favoured by several African cities. However, very little research has been carried out into the socio-economic implications of these networks. We are therefore examining the socio-economic issues involved in using peri-urban agriculture to enhance the green spaces in the Conakry urban area. To achieve this, the methodology was based on a mixed approach. Part of the data was collected during the field phase of the thesis (Camara, 2023) through a survey using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. These data were supplemented by documentary analysis (the newUrbanMasterPlan for Greater Conakry and the National Agricultural Development Policy). The results show that households are essentially pluriactive. Peri-urban agriculture on green belts is a central element in the strategy of these households, which constitutes their socio-economic resilience. However, these households remain vulnerable in terms of their land tenure status.
