Abstract: Does economic thinking help us cope with disasters? We attempt to answer this broad question by starting with a catastrophe: climate change, and an episode in the history of economic thought: the luxury debate. The aim is to show that taxing luxury emissions is a promising avenue, bringing the luxury debate back to life. If rehabilitating this debate can help us fight against the climate catastrophe, the latter also invites us to reexamine the outcome of it.
