Abstract:
This article explores the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR), financial performance (FP) and the moderating effect of family ownership and eponymous companies, i.e. firms named after the founding family. We show that family firms and eponymous ones, engage more in CSR activities than non-family and non-eponymous firms, which has a positive impact on their FP. Our empirical study is based on a sample of French companies listed on the SBF 120 over the period 2016-2021. This research sheds theoretical and empirical light on the issue of ownership structure in relation to CSR. We conclude that corporate reputation is the factor that most influences the adoption of CSR strategies in family-owned and eponymous companies, resulting in superior performance. Regulators and stakeholders should be aware of the potential impact of CSR engagement.
